"Monsoon"
Jatiwangi International Performance Artist in Residence 2006 in Jatiwangi, Indonesia, 16-18 Dec. 2006
In the performance/Installation "Monsoon" Ekici takes relationship to the most common Asian Weather season and transforms it into art. Ekici wants to present the rain as a visual and asthetic impact. That's, why the arrangement of the Installation Performance resembles a dream situation. This performance deals with dreams, which is represented by a virtual rain. The sound of the rain is boosted y sound system and microphones. As the water drips down, it also hits the umbrella. Normally one can not hear the dripping water, dispite one stands very near to this place. The artist wants the viewer to become a part of this dream by involving him not only by means of visibility but also accustically. The dripping of water of wet clothes onto the umbrella, can be heard all aver the exhibition room. This scence is unreal, although it is composed of real elements. Eventhough surreal impressions dominate this work, a social meaning is implicit. The clothes in the exhibition, normally standing for the picture a person gives of himself in public, now turns out to be nothing more but a useless and dysfunctional inhabitant of the exhibition room. It is a confrontation of aspects created by human culture and the nature itself, symbolized by real grass. The clothes try hard to become more natural by storing up water, but this is only a poetic way.
